Abstract
The chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria has been increasing in incidence worldwide and is responsible for high mortality rates around the world. The risk of acquiring malaria abroad is increasing as more Koreans travel to areas where malaria
is
endemic and resistant to many antimalarial drugs.
Here, we report two cases of imported chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. Five men traveled to Senegal and Mali while taking chloroquine for prophylactic purpose during their journey. Two of them developed high fever and thrombocytopenia.
Their
peripheral blood smears taken during febrile periods showed ring forms of Plasmodium falciparum. They recovered without complications after being treated with mefloquine.
